In 2017 we launched our Target Zero strategy to ensure we manage our resources across our main worksites (Port Office, Operations Base, Brisbane Multimodal Terminal and the TSHD Brisbane dredge vessel).
By 2030 and through Target Zero, we are aiming to reduce our overall carbon footprint by achieving:
- Zero net emissions (scope 1 and 2)
- Zero PBPL-generated waste to landfill
- Net positive water (using more rainwater or recycled water than potable water).
Some of our key initiatives include:
- Rooftop solar and battery storage – Over 1,300 kW of rooftop solar is installed on PBPL-managed buildings and we’ve introduced battery storage. One of the car parks at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal is literally covered in rooftop solar, which powers the terminal building!
- Containers for Change – We collect containers at the BICT and in our offices. All money raised goes to our Employee Charity.
- Upcycling at our Operations Base – Our Marine Maintenance team is passionate about reusing and upcycling materials in the workshop, finding new uses for marine and operational purposes. By reinvigorating these materials, they’ve prevented a significant amount of material going to landfill.
- Recycling streams – We recycle many materials including uniforms, scrap metal, oils and greases, cardboard, organic materials and have great initiatives like providing reusable coffee cups at the Port Café for port workers.
- Material re-use and recycling on construction projects – Our Infrastructure and Property teams work with construction partners to use recycled materials were practical, or to recycle or reuse materials generated from construction projects
